Tom Apperley

Graduate Cost Manager, Brisbane
Bachelor of Urban Development, majoring in Quantity Surveying at Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

I joined Turner & Townsend in July 2024 as a cadet while completing my degree. I’ve always had an interest in construction, even as a kid. My dad used to joke that I’d either end up driving the gear or helping build something, and I guess I chose the latter. That early curiosity is what pushed me towards quantity surveying, because there’s so much variety in the work across a wide range of different projects. Turner & Townsend has given me the opportunity to step into the industry early and start developing my career in a way that aligns with everything I worked towards at university. Since moving into a Graduate Cost Manager role in 2026, I’ve continued to grow and develop my skills through practical project experience. It is a supportive environment where I am constantly learning and gaining confidence as I progress throughout my career.

Jeany Versalius

As a Construction Economist, commencing as a graduate in 2025, I have the opportunity to begin my first corporate role in an environment that is both challenging and inspiring. Each day brings something new to learn, and the nature of the work has helped me grow both professionally and personally.

I feel grateful to be surrounded by an amazing team. My manager and colleagues have been exceptionally supportive, continuously guiding me as I develop my skills and navigate the industry. The exposure I have received has provided invaluable insight into how economic principles translate into practical construction outcomes.

Beyond the technical work, I also appreciate the strong team culture and commitment to work–life balance. We take the time to connect through cultural events and team-bonding activities that create a positive and enjoyable workplace

“I joined Turner & Townsend as a graduate in 2017 in our Project Management Real Estate after finishing my degree in Physical Geography. Construction Project Management is not something I ever considered as a career path, but I can honestly say I have enjoyed it thoroughly and believe it’s the perfect job for me (having done it for nearly 8 years now).  Have been fortunate in getting involved in a wide range of projects, ranging from two new football hubs, ward refurbishments during Covid, office fitouts to joining our advisory team and helping global clients set their net zero goals.

Not only have I been given the opportunity to work on some great projects, I have also been able to get involved in a number of extra-curricular initiatives that Turner and Townsend support including leading my local office Corporate Responsibility team for 4 years, becoming chair of the NAWIC committee and also being nominated for a number of amazing programs that help promote future leaders.

Over the last year, my journey in Turner & Townsend has allowed me to move from Newcastle in the UK to Melbourne through our global mobility policy to experience even more projects and also get an understandin of how Turner & Townsend works globally. The graduate program has been an amazing learning experience and has also allowed me to make lasting connections who have had a significant impact on me. I couldn’t recommend the graduate scheme enough for those who enjoy a fast-paced and rewarding career!”

Melanie Evans

Cost Manager
Quantity Surveying BSc Honours

“I joined Turner & Townsend’s graduate program in 2019 as a graduate cost manager. Initially, I worked in the Infrastructure sector, focusing on transport and ports/marine projects. One of my most challenging and rewarding experiences was managing a challenging project with Peel Ports during the post-contract phase, where I was on-site weekly to witness the project's progress firsthand.

I've also had the opportunity to work in the Real Estate sector at Turner & Townsend, where I contribute to a capital works program for National Australia Bank. Providing cost management and financial assurance services for such a key client has been an amazing experience.

Some of my standout highlights include completing the Graduate Development Program and relocating from Glasgow to Melbourne with Turner & Townsend.”

Ashlyn O'Riordan

"I joined Turner & Townsend as an infrastructure project management graduate in January of 2021 in the London office. My first commission was with GlaxoSmithKline, creating a Planned Preventative Maintenance programme for their R&D laboratory assets. In 2022 I moved into the water sector, working with Northumbrian Water and our cost management team on a programme of 17 essential infrastructure and biodiversity net gain projects as an NEC contract administrator. In 2023 I was fortunate enough to move to the Turner & Townsend Melbourne office to lead on the construction delivery of the terminal works section of the Melbourne Airport T2 Next project, a c.$550m international baggage handling system upgrade.

My favourite things about Turner & Townsend are the people and the opportunities on offer; I’ve been lucky to work with incredibly talented and friendly colleagues in a wide range of sectors throughout Infrastructure across the globe".

Calum McKay,

Cost Manager
Studied a Bachelor of Construction from the Unitec Institute of Technology

“In my first year at Turner & Townsend I was thrown into a challenging project with an international client in my first week. After 2 months I was given a great personal development opportunity to lead the Chillers package for the APAC region. After the final tasks were closed out at handover, I supported Senior Cost Managers on a range of quantity surveying support services for a month or so on an Animal Care centre project.

I was granted another amazing opportunity to support the Melbourne project delivery team across the OFCI segment in 3 major data centres. Under intense pressure to meet an important deadline, we have succeeded in a major deliverable with the support from my senior manager and time from some colleagues. I will continue to help solve challenges each day in this exciting role”.

Robert Barker

“I joined as a mature-aged cadet while studying in 2008, starting out working on the International Terminal Upgrade at Sydney Airport, followed by the Southern Sydney Freight Line project. In 2012, I was involved at inception on the Sydney Light Rail, exploring route options through the city and developing the Business Case, and leading to exposure to other Light Rail projects in Canberra, Parramatta and the Gold Coast. I’ve also been fortunate to be associated with the Sydney Metro since its formation, working on the Northwest, City & South West and most recently in Metro West to link Parramatta with the Sydney CBD.

Over the years, Turner & Townsend has continually offered me the opportunity to work on interesting projects across the country and beyond. From 2015 to 2017, I was involved in the Chairman’s Group, a select team tasked with exploring new and exciting initiatives under the direct guidance of our Chairman and CEO in London”.

Matt Billingham

Operations Director
BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying

“I joined Turner & Townsend in 1995 as a graduate and started my career in our London office where I was given the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects in the commercial office and higher education sectors. Eventually I became a specialist in research facilities and supported the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council and other project collaborators on the development of the $1bn Francis Crick Institute. In 2006 I moved to Birmingham where I led the local cost management team before becoming strategic lead for the Birmingham Office. Since 2011 I have been responsible for running our business in Western Australia, one of our global resource sector hubs.

Why have I stayed with the same company for 28 years? The collaborative spirit of our business is something that I really enjoy – when we focus the collected capabilities of our people we achieve amazing results. By embracing collaboration I have learnt so much from my colleagues that has enabled me to move between geographical markets and sectors. Saying “yes” to the many opportunities that have been presented to me has led me to work on the other side of the world from where I started. I now work with our team in a diverse market where we support both local and global clients in the delivery of some of the most significant projects and programs across the natural resources, real estate and infrastructure sectors”.
