Hazel Le
Associate – Transfer Pricing
Bachelor of Business (Finance)
What made you feel that Grant Thornton was the right place for you?
I first joined Grant Thornton as a vacationer in the Transfer Pricing team in Melbourne. Coming in, I had no prior experience or technical knowledge in the field, so naturally I was a little unsure of what to expect. However, from day one, both the firm and my team were incredibly welcoming and supportive, which immediately made me feel like I belonged.
What really stood out to me was how willing everyone was to support my learning. The team didn’t just teach me technical knowledge; they also helped me understand what it truly means to work in a professional services environment.
I believe Grant Thornton’s culture is what truly sets it apart. Everyone is friendly, approachable and genuinely generous with their time. As a graduate or vacationer, you definitely have many questions about processes, expectations, and even basic terminology. The team has never made me feel hesitant to ask. There was always someone willing to explain things clearly and guide me in the right direction.
What do you enjoy most about working in your Service Line? What’s the most challenging?
I really enjoy the variety and depth of the work. It combines both qualitative and quantitative aspects, ranging from compliance to advisory and ad hoc services. I also love working with a diverse client portfolio, ranging from manufacturers to retailers across different industries. It’s fascinating to understand their business operations and engage directly with financial managers and CFOs, which makes the work highly engaging and rewarding.
The most challenging part has been that this service line is entirely new compared to what I studied at university, so I had to learn almost everything on the job. Thankfully, my team has been incredibly supportive, guiding me through concepts, projects, and compliance work, and generously sharing their time and knowledge.
What’s one project or experience that made you feel proud?
One experience that really made me proud was a fortnightly training session within my team on Transfer Pricing topics. About three months after joining as a graduate, I was allocated to co-lead a training session with another graduate from Sydney.
What made this moment special was the trust the team placed in us as new graduates to deliver a session to the entire team. It was a great opportunity to demonstrate our presentation and public-speaking skills, but more importantly, it showed that Grant Thornton values contributions from all team members and encourages everyone to actively support the team’s success. The session went really well, and the positive feedback we received made us feel both accomplished and recognised. It was a memorable and rewarding experience that highlighted the working culture at Grant Thornton.
How would you describe the culture in three words?
Collaborative, inclusive and uplifting.

What made you feel that Grant Thornton was the right place for you?
From my very first interaction with Grant Thornton, the people made me feel comfortable, welcomed and supported. Every conversation felt genuine, and it was clear that they cared not just about filling a role, but about finding the right fit for me and my growth.
When I joined as a vacationer, that feeling was reinforced. As a first-year student, I was encouraged to ask questions, get involved, and learn. People consistently made time to explain things and check in, which made a big difference to my experience.
Over time, I realised how closely the culture aligns with who I am - very people-driven, collaborative and positive. I enjoy the working environment just as much as the work itself, and that balance is what made Grant Thornton feel like the right place for me.
What do you enjoy most about working in your Service Line? What’s the most challenging?
What I love most about Audit & Assurance is the variety. One week I might be working on a large listed client, and the next I could be supporting a not-for-profit or a growing private business. Being exposed to such a broad range of industries - from education to energy and everything in between - keeps every day interesting and meaningful.
I also love that audit balances problem-solving with people. It satisfies my analytical, detail-oriented side, while also giving me the chance to build relationships with clients and collaborate with different team members on each engagement.
The most challenging part has been learning to navigate complex accounting problems and tight deadlines, especially early on. But that challenge has been incredibly rewarding. Each engagement stretches my thinking, builds my confidence, and reminds me how much I am growing.
How has Grant Thornton supported your wellbeing and growth?
Grant Thornton has supported my growth in ways that feel both structured and personal. From day one, I’ve had access to training, coaching, and approachable seniors and managers who genuinely want to see me succeed.
On a wellbeing level, the open conversations around mental health, flexible arrangements, and regular check-ins make it feel comfortable to reach out and ask for support. On a growth level, I’ve been given exposure to real client work early, along with constructive feedback that helps me improve.
I’ve grown not only technically, but also in confidence, communication, and professional judgement, and it’s been an ongoing journey of development.
How do the CARE values show up in your day-to-day work?
Collaboration shows up every day through open conversations, teamwork, and people willingly helping each other, regardless of their role.
Authenticity shows up in how people bring their whole selves to work - asking questions, working through problems together, and supporting one another.
Respect is reflected in the way everyone’s voice is valued and listened to.
Excellence comes through in the pride people take in their work, the constructive feedback they give, and the shared commitment to continuous improvement

What made you feel that Grant Thornton was the right place for you?
Grant Thornton’s emphasis on its people was what really stood out to me. It was important to me to work in a place where I felt like I was valued on a personal level but still had the opportunities of a large firm. Throughout the entire recruitment process I observed a culture of ensuring that there was a high level of care and investment in people and a personal aspect embedded in the culture. Having core values that include collaboration and authenticity was very important to me and seeing that these were embedded in the day-to-day culture within the firm made me feel like it would be the right place for me.
How would you describe the culture in three words?
Inclusive, personalised and supportive.
What’s one project or experience that made you feel proud?
Audit is a job where you are constantly learning, so a standout moment for me was when the vacationer program was happening and I was assigned as a buddy to a vacationer. The opportunity to teach and train someone else was a nice realisation of the culmination of learning that I had undertaken over my first year as a graduate. It’s easy to not realise how much you have learnt in a short period of time because there is always more to be learning and adapting to, so it was a nice moment to reflect and feel I was making a difference by now being in a position where I am able to be on the other side delivering the training.
What skills or experiences have you gained that you didn’t expect?
The level of communication skills that I have gained has been something that I did not expect. Working with such a diverse range of clients as well as working closely with a variety of colleagues has meant that I have learned to adapt my communication style to ensure the most effective communication depending on what is required. I have noticed I now more actively focus on the type of questions I am asking as well as picking up on different people’s communication styles more quickly to ensure that my communications with them are efficient and I am able to adapt. These are skills that are transferrable into my life outside of work and something that I did not expect would be such a significant skill to have improved as part of my employment.
